IS YOUR TEACHER NORTHERN IRELAND’S GREENEST TEACHER?

The Action Renewables in association with Norfolkline Irish Sea, 'Northern Ireland’s Green Teacher of the Year 2008' has been awarded.

Standards of entry were very high which made judging extremely difficult.   The judging panel were impressed by the number and quality of entries received from students, the amazing teachers they nominated and the green projects that students are already undertaking in their schools.

After much discussion and hard work our judges made a shortlist of green teachers and their schools, all of which showed brilliant work in all sorts of environmental issues:

Primary Finalists

Brídín Ní Dhonnghaile from Bunscoil an Chasistil, Ballycastle
Kevin Burns from St Patrick’s Primary, Legamaddy
Mrs Finlay, Belleek Primary School, Belleek, Enniskillen
Mrs Kelsall, Killylea Primary School, Armagh
Mrs Mattison, Fairhill Primary School, Dromara
Mrs Murray, St. Anne’s Primary School, Derry

Post-Primary Finalists

Mrs Rusk from Ballee Community College
Mrs Wilson from Grosvenor Grammar School

There could only be one primary school winner and one post primary school winner, so after further research and hard debate from the judges we are proud to announce our winners:

Northern Ireland’s Primary Green Teacher of the Year 2008 is Mrs Kelsall from Killylea Primary School; and

Northern Ireland’s Post-Primary Green Teacher of the Year 2008 is Mrs Rusk from Ballee Community College

IS YOUR TEACHER NORTHERN IRELAND’S GREENEST TEACHER?

Northern Irelands leading organisation in the promotion and development of renewable energy, Action Renewables and Norfolkline Irish Sea have launched a search for Northern Ireland’s ‘Green Teacher Of The Year 2008’.

Pupils throughout the province are being asked to enter the teacher they feel plays a significant role within their school in promoting a greener environment. There are two categories in the awards, one primary and one post-primary.

Dr. Andy McCrea, Director, Action Renewables said “Schools throughout Northern Ireland have developed excellent strategies to educate children on ways to help the environment. We are delighted to launch this competition to find Northern Ireland’s greenest teachers and we believe the quality of entries will be strong as schools have become increasingly dedicated in ensuring children are educated on protecting the environment.”

Action Renewables education programme, which is supported by Norfolkline, visits primary and post-primary schools across Northern Ireland to raise awareness of sustainable renewable technology. Throughout 2007, Action Renewables have delivered customised visits to over 150 schools, creating awareness of renewable energy and climate change to approximately 13,000 pupils across the province.

Diane Poole, General Manager – Passenger, Norfolkline said, “It is our responsibility to strive to make the environment greener for those coming after us. Norfolkline is delighted to be involved in the search for Northern Ireland’s greenest teachers, as they are the role models for the young and will set the standards for other teachers throughout the province.”

Each winning teacher in the two categories will return travel from Belfast to Liverpool for a car and four people on an evening sailing, including en-suite cabin, dinner and breakfast, Body Board, Solar Watch and Trophy. The pupils who enter the winning teachers will also win return travel with Norfolkline for a car and four people. Should the Isle of Lewis have the largest onshore wind farm in Europe? : Northern Irelands A level students decide.

9th November 2007

21st Febuary 2008

Northern Irelands leading renewable energy experts at Action Renewables have teamed up with W5 to create a decision-making exercise where facts, information and expert advice is given to help students make a decision critical to the lives of generations to come. This workshop-style event helps students with their A level Geography by allowing students to enter the tough real life decision-making process that capturing wind energy on a commercial scale demands. The event allows students to take on the roles of various stake holders in this real-life issue, using real information and genuine opinions and with support from the Action Renenwables engineers and education team as well as CEA A level examiners.

Our Wind Turbines

April 2007

The P7 class of Creggan P.S., Randalstown recently completed a project based on Renewable Energy.   The class had discussed topics relating to global warming, and the reasons for the new wind turbine at Antrim Area Hospital.   The interest generated was further developed into a Science and Technology project to build individual wind turbines.  The activity was based on the current curriculum and the Revised Curriculum strand of The World Around Us and using resources from the Action Renewables website.
